[9] Batsala Temple: Constructing Tourist Sites
Tourists are simply those who visit other places to learn about culture. If I go to Calcutta I am a tourist. Those who go for business are not tourists. . . Those who are here to study our culture, history and religion are tourists.
-- Lilibhakta Munamkarmi, 10 June 1999

There is no doubt that many Westerners traveling to Nepal are looking to take from Buddhism and Hinduism what our own culture has tried to exclude from its discourse. They travel abroad to discover in distant lands something that they perceive to have become unrecognizable in the West, that is, the encroachment of unbridled materialism and modernity into traditional space. And often, if they cannot find it in Nepal they make it themselves, or better yet, local people seeing a service to provide make it for them. From the roof Cafe de Temple look off across the square to your right. Much of Bernardo Bertolucci¹s Little Buddha was filmed near the Batsala Temple that lies on the western end of Durban Square.
